"I Need A Scapegoat"

Isaiah 53 & 55 "means The Lord Saves" ---- aren’t you glad --- say I’m glad the Lord saves -- say "me Too"

Jesus is the Messiah and Savior who was, who is and who was to come.

    1. 1st 20 chapters deal with Isreal and judgements 2nd 20 deal with comfort, salvation and the kingdom to come
  • let him return to the Lord
  • our purpose ---- what we were created for
  •

The Suffering Savior Isaiah 53: 1-9

      1. (V 1) Arm of the Lord = symbol power of God salvation was told of by the prophets
      2. (V 2) Grew up like a plant, tender shoot from "stump of Jesse" Davids father -- the Assyrains all but destroyed Judah -- the Messiah will spring up from the nothing that is left -- God takes not much and makes something great out it.
      3. (V 2) Like a root out of dry ground
      4. he would be humble beginnings

born in a manger with animals

      5. (V 2) There was no pomp and circumstance to draw us to him
      6. didn’t look like royalty, no priestly garb, therefore people despised him
      7. (V 3) Man of sorrows – was familiar with pain both physical and mental –
      8. but we held no esteem for Him

he didn’t come from the right family

wasn’t part of the right group

didn’t go to right school –

don’t you think this hurt Him -- made Him grief

      9. (V4 & 5) tell what Jesus did for us took our infirmities
      10. yet we said he was stricken by God for his own sins impossible He had no sin --

the religious folk were after Him

      11. His sufferings were vicarious,
      12. He was our scapegoat he was the ram with two goats offering on the cross
      13. (V 5) His punishment that was ours brought us peace and "by his stripes we are healed" back to relationship with God this is what provides the healing, the miracles the power to be a Christian
      1. (V 6.) What did we do, "like sheep all went astray, each turned to his own way.
      2. But God laid His hands on Jesus just as the priests were to lay hands on the sacrifices for the peoples sins but this time is was once and for all
  • Without belief in Jesus the cross means nothing
  • The Exalted Savior V 10, 11, 12 exalt – to lift up to promote to be higher

      1. God made Jesus’ life guilt offering,
      2. the ultimate sin offering did what no offering could do before -- wipe out our sins, cover us in His blood

OT had to keep doing this every year

Sprinkled altar with blood of the ram

      3. Took the sins of the world
      4. But God will cause Him to prosper
      5. see offspring, us the saved the believers in Him followers

prolong His days he lives forever

God raised Jesus from dead to the heavens

        Jesus is still alive

      6. (Heb 10: 5-7) The heart of Worship (Ps 40: 6-8) God had enough of the sacrifices
      7. they did not work

sacrifice on Sunday – worship on Sunday – say hi to you on Sunday – give On Sunday

rotten again on Monday gone their own way

showed no real concern for one another

      8. Our scapegoat
      9. he took punishment we deserved

        took our place

        took the blame for us

      10. (V 11) After the suffering God will raise Him ---- the resurrection
      11. (V 12) Place Him above the great and strong
      12. why ------- he bore the sin of many
  • now is intercessor for us

    he prays for us

    pleads for us

  • has been promoted to right hand of God

The Inviting Savior Isaiah 55: 1-7

      1. water gives live
      2. biologically need water 90% of body is water
      3. water is symbol for Holy Spirit
      4. Spirit gives spiritual life
      5. must be born again

        of spirit and truth

      6. We are spirit ------
      7. we live in a tent

        our physical bodies

        is not who we are

      8. Physical needs food ----
      9. spiritual needs food also --- the Word
      10. (V 1-2) the invitation is given
      11. come all who are thirsty – or hungry

        thirst after righteousness

      12. have no money
      13. doesn’t matter

salvation, redemption is free to us

cost God a lot ----- His son ------ everything

Abraham was to give up his son ------ type and shadow

others meant more than His own Son

      14. invites us to salvation –
      15. it is free for us – cost God everything -

By His grace (Gods gift received at Christ’s expense) His Arm touching us – enableing us – thru faith – believe in Jesus, who he was

to good works according to His purposes

      16. He invites us to walk with Him –
      17. kids Bible class says --- "Do one to others as they do one to you"

travel the same road – do unto others as we want them to do to us –

      18. (V 3) God will make covenant with us – a new one not like the old one in OT rules etc
      19. John 8: 31-32 The truth will set you free

        He promised it to David

Was Christ – now promised to all peoples

      20. (V 4) God made him a witness
      21. (V 5-6) will summon nations you don’t know and nations will come to you that you don’t know Jew and Gentile now
      22. Just as Ruth left Moab as she was drawn to the God of Niomoi

People will be drawn to God thru us and our actions

      23. (V 6) seek the Lord while he may be found
      24. terrible to fall in hands of angry God (Pastor Jonathan Edwards)

Judgment time will be too late

        No time for esoteric experiences

        Back to the basics

Not the hypocritical seeking as in 58:6 on true fasting

        Repentence, doing good, seeking God

      25. (V 7) let the wicked forsake his way, the evil man his thoughts
  • turn to the Lord or return to the Lord if strayed
  • result of this seeking and finding is full pardon

  • from the wrath for sins

    Gods anger and punishment

Not just the Good life but the abundant life

Is hope for those lost, but have to seize the opportunity to come to Jesus

Our job is to send the lifeline and yours is to grab on before your life is over

Illust-à preacher and man and 2 teenage boys in shipwreck

    Who to throw line to

His son saved so he threw it to other boy

Other boy became preacher for many

Just like God he gave up his son for the other boy

We get spiritual life when we come to God

Our soul shall live—means our life shall live

Invites us to worship the "Here & Now

    Not the "Then and was"

    Or the "someday and maybe"

Invites us to sense His mercy

  • Mat 11:28 28Come to me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke on you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest to your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Was said to all but mainly was about the religious folk
