The Week That Was

Isa 53: 5-11

The most Holy of weeks, the events leading to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah!

The week that completed the new Covenant and paved the way for our salvation.

The events begin some time before the Passover celebration

• Lazarus raised from the dead

• He returned to Judea, where they tried to stone Him
• • John 10:25
• He professed to be the Son of God at the Feast of Dedication
• • He was circumcised at this feast
• He comforted the sisters
• • Stated I Am the resurrection and the life John 11:25
  • Martha the one concerned with details
  • She came to believe that Jesus was the Christ
• Lazarus raised after four days in the tomb
• • Could be no mistake about Jesus power and claims
  • Body started to decay
• Was done to see the glory of God not Jesus the man

• Went to visit Mary, Martha and Lazarus right before Passover John 12:1

• 6 days before Passover
• to celebrate raising Lazarus from the dead
• THAT showed that Jesus had power over death

• Was there that Mary anointed him, the alabaster jar
• Judas upset, he wanted to sell it for money
• Many learned He was there and came to see Him as well as Lazarus
• Chief priests decided to kill Lazarus also
• • Caiaphas convinced the people it was to their advantage that one should die for the nation rather than the nation perish
  • This is when they started to look for a way to kill Him
  • Were concerned only with themselves

• The Entry into Jerusalem Sunday

• The priests had been wondering if Jesus was coming to the festival
• • People heard He was coming
  • Went with palm branches out to meet Him
  • Shouted Hosanna Lord save us
• Got a donkey never used before
• Disciples found as He had said Luke 19:28
• • Entered Jerusalem on donkey, symbol of peace
  • Procession was one of a conqueror
  • Fulfilled prophecy Zec 9:9
  • Thought Jesus could liberate them from the Romans as Judas Maccabeus had done to the Syrains
• He was coming to liberate us spiritually

• Clean out the Temple Monday

• Gentile court full of traders
• Selling sacrifices for the Passover
• Concerned with money, not the Passover itself
• Had some form, no substance

• The fig tree – Mark 11:12 & 20
• • Had leaves early, should have had figs Jesus cursed it on way TO the temple
  • When they went back to Jerusalem it had died next day
  • Jesus taught disciples about faith

• Celebrate when God took Israel out of Egypt
• Jesus is our Passover-----takes us out of the bondage of the sin of this world
• New meaning to this feast the broken bread , His broken body and the wine His shed blood
• Afterward His prayers in the Garden
• I come to the Garden to Pray!
• Struggled with his humanity, but was obedient to God His Father and ours!

The Trial and Sentencing of Jesus

• False witnesses---could not get their story straight
• Jesus said "I am"
• Blasphemy to the priests—condemned Him to death
• Had to get the Romans to crucify Him Mark 15:2

The Suffering and Beatings

• After Pilate found no guilt in Him

• Jews had hoped for a deliverer
• Wanted Him to set up His earthly Kingdom
• He had to establish His spiritual Kingdom first
• He was not coming to sit on His throne but to Die on the Cross
• • A saving Jesus to help you and I be forgiven and find peace with God
  • To be reconciled back to God
  • To be joined to our creator
  • To worship God /bring him pleasure
  • To fellowship with God as Father
  • To disciple others and become like Jesus
  • To Minister and serve God
  • To evangelize , tell about Jesus and fulfill our mission

• He laid down his life---even on the cross His thoughts were with the people Luke 23:34, 44-48
• Was at end of Feast of Passover/Unleavened Bread----offered as a FirstFruits was barley harvest, offered to God as thanks for His gifts
• Today Passover is the Eucharist
• • Broken bread represents His body, pierced and the broken relationship He experienced on the Cross Mark 15:34 Why Have you forsaken me
  • The sins laid on Jesus –God could not look on the sin during His wrath
• Main harvest Feast was at Weeks/Pentecost----50 days later—Gift of the Holy Spirit

Conclusion: So this week changed history.

• • So much so that we count time different
  • The events this week split time
  • Now had BC and AD
  • I for one am glad for the AD addoni dominai----in the year of our Lord
  • Without THIS week there would be no Gospel, no resurrection, no power over death no victory, no glorious appearing for 40 days of a risen Savior, no hope for mankind
  • He came because of our sins
  • Rom 3:10 "No one is righteousness" 3:23 all have sinned and fallen short
  • 1Tim 1:15 "A faithful saying, that Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of which I am chief"
  • He died to pay for our sins Isa 53:5 "wounded for our disobedience"
  • Rom 5:8-9 "God shows his love, while we were sinners Christ died for us, having been justified thru His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him"
  • Colos 1:14 "We have redemption and forgiveness of sins thru His blood"
  • a week that was to establish undeserved grace—birth pains of the church – simple salvation, belief – way back to peace within and peace with God our Maker and Father
  • Have you accepted what He has done? Believed in Him Made Him Ruler Lord of you r life?
  • Can you rejoice that He made the journey into the Holy City for a week that changed everything including you and me?
